Remember when my husband and I went to the doctor and she did a surprise ultrasound at 16 weeks?? And said she was 80% sure it was a boy?
Well, I had my “official” ultrasound on Monday and almost hopped out of the chair when she declared, “Not one mother has been right today, you’re having a little girl!!”
WHAT?!!
A little girl!
Since this pregnancy felt so similar to Jackson’s, I was convinced this baby would be another boy. The doctor’s visit last month confirmed that, and I was getting comfortable with the idea of having two boys. (My husband and I only want two children, so I thought my chance to have a girl had passed.)
Lying on the chair in the dimmed room with a hunk of gel on my belly, emotions were bubbling over! I get a little girl! First thoughts of dresses, bows, tights appeared; then the movie advanced to think of shopping, cuddle time, manicures, braids and Kindergarten!
All the little treasures I hadn’t considered.
Walking out of the hospital, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of urgency! A desperate need to begin achieving more of my goals in order to prove to her that she can reach hers. A want to be the kind of mom she would think about with pride and admiration.
What a joyful blessing! My heart is full and my excitement can’t be contained!!
If you have girls, I would love some parenting advice, book recommendations, or peeks into special moments that you’ve shared with your daughter. I’m all ears!!

Congratulations Amy. Dan and I have Kara, who just turned five. I have to say that one of my favorite things about having a girl is knowing that you are the most influential person in her life. No other person will have a greater impact on her life than you will. It is so insightful (and self-reflective) to watch mannerisms and characteristics that you see in yourself develop in a daughter. I also have to say there aren’t too many things that will warm your heart more than seeing your husband with a daughter. There is just something special about the moments that they share. I fall in love with them more and more every day! Enjoy getting ready for your little girl.
Hi Donna,
Thanks so much for your comment! I am absolutely in love with the idea of having a girl! John is so funny–since the doctor thought we were having a boy (when I was at 16 weeks) so not totally convinced it’s a girl:P But that doesn’t mean I haven’t already started making plans for what “us girls” are going to do in the future. Can’t wait!!
I hope Dan is able to come home soon! It must be tough working and taking care of Kara by yourself. Let me know if you need anything.
Warmly,
Amy
P.S. Congrats on the New Years Crossfit pic! That’s awesome!!
Girls are the best! But I have to say that … I have 3!!! (under the age of 6). You know what’s so neat, is seeing yourself in them. I’m seeing it a lot right now w/ my 5 1/2 yr. old. Her personality is so similar to how mine was as a little girl.
My daily prayer for them is they will find their security(self worth) in God’s love.
Congrats!!!
