Yesterday while going for a pregnancy check-up, I told the doctor that my husband would probably not be in town for the ultrasound. With a window of time open, I was desperately hoping to get in with radiology before my husband left. It was a long shot to think we could get into radiology with such short notice.
However, my story was ready. (My story had been rehearsed in my head throughout the day.) It meant so much to me that we were together for the ultrasound, to connect with our new baby.
The doctor listened, then turned to my husband and I and said she had an ultrasound machine in the next room and would do her best to determine the gender of the baby.
Wow.
No begging required! She was willing help on the spot.
So then a miracle happened.
The doctor went on and on about how healthy the baby looked. She saw him take a couple gulps of amniotic fluid while we were watching. The umbilical cord kept getting in the way of our clear view, and the doctor gave us an 80% chance that the baby is a boy. There will be a more in-depth ultrasound in a few weeks.
Let’s throw aside the fact that I will be mom in the land of boys (seriously, Audrey, how do you do it). Since it’s not 100%, I am not worrying about the gender until the next ultrasound. What made the biggest impression on me was how healthy he looked. Sweet head, big full belly, and moving around like a dancer.
Something clicked for me when I got back into my car and saw a soda can in the drink holder. That sweet, healthy baby deserves something better from me. I really need to be more careful with what food I am giving the baby. My super fierce sweet tooth needs to be tempered during this pregnancy.
Since I had this “revelation” on Mardi Gras, I decided to give up sweets until Easter.
So friends, I won’t be seeing you until the Easter bunny arrives…
Yes, I will miss you!! That sweet baby will not, though.

Congrats! Boys are great (now that I’m expecting my second). They love their momma’s!! I’m glad everything went well and he/she certainly looks healthy. I hope the rest of your pregnancy is happy and healthy!
That’s awesome, Amy! That was so sweet of the Dr to do that for you guys. I can’t imagine my life without my 2 boys. They’re so fiercely loyal to me and we just have so much fun. Can’t wait to hear the “for sure, for sure” results!
CONGRATS!!! Boy or Girl…so glad the baby seems so healthy!
Giving up sweets?! You will deserve sainthood by the time Easter rolls around! I need to send you a giant chocolate bunny
I am so excited for you!!!!!!
I loved this post. And congrats on your baby boy! We’re trying for our second, this is actually the first month, so I’m excited for you! Hope I can be in your shoes sometime soon! What an excellent sacrifice for your little one…I commend you! It’s so hard to give up the things we enjoy. I’m proud of you, and so is your little one!
You will love having 2 boys. It will be awesome
And they can share clothes and when they get a bit older they will play with the same toys. I love having boys!
I also gave up sweets. It will be very hard for me too.
Good luck! My 3rd wouldn’t let me eat sweets. It made me sick. I should have known then he was going to be a challenge
But, I think I’m too madly in love with chocolate. I’d be in literal pain. But, I do have the greatest respect for you and your decision.
By the way, it was wonderful meeting you at Blissdom!
Very proud of you. Motherhood is full of sacrifices…but the rewards, now those are so much sweeter than any candy or sugar drink. Nine months is nothing for a lifetime of good health. Great job little momma. Nancy
