The winner is…made by mom

The whole “buying vs. making” baby food really had me bogged down, but it was getting ridiculous that he was six months old and hadn’t had a drop of real food.

Just as I was getting overwhelmed, I talked with a Crossfitting buddy on Monday about her choice to make her own food.  Turns out–she says it’s a lot easier than I thought.  She only spent an hour or two each month to prepare a month’s supply of food, which she froze and took them out, as needed.  It would also prove to be a big money-saver, too.

My friend sent over an excel spreadsheet where she had compared the price per ounce of homeade food vs. baby food.  In many cases, the price per pound is AT LEAST two or three times the amount of homemade food.

If you are thinking about making your own baby food, supposedly “Super Baby Foods” is considered the Bible for recipes, nutritional information and charts that tell you when and what to feed your baby.

We picked it up from Barnes and Noble, and it has been very helpful.  It has really eliminated my anxiety about making baby food.

But my conclusion isn’t to keep him from Gerber completely.  This mom wants an 80% solution.  Eighty percent of the time (or nearly), I will happily make his food.  But, if we are traveling or I want to pop a jar of baby food in his diaper bag before we run errands, I’m fine with that, too.  And if making the food turns out to be a huge pain, I can really stop at any time!

You can bet there will be posting in the future about this process, but in the meantime, here’s some eye-candy:)  This is from his first ever meal.  His first meal was…Bananas!  With a little bit of water, mixed in the blender.

Jackson is awaiting his first bite!

He was a little skeptical.

If you want to see a short clip of the feeding, there’s one waiting for you on YouTube.  It’s about 40 seconds long, but oh. so. cute!!! I don’t know how to load videos onto WordPress, so here’s the link: First meal.

P.S. He will be getting a beautiful, new high chair.  We don’t plan on feeding him in the Bumbo forever:)

YEAH! Amy and Jackson! I too love the Super Baby Food book. It is great! So you didn’t get it on amazon huh?:) Hey nothing wrong with sitting in the bumbo..we use both with Connor. You are so good. I was so adamant about Connor not eating baby food until 6 months and I caved at almost 5 months. :( But it is a lot of fun. So far I bought brown rice organic cereal from Gerber and have made him avocado’s. Next is banana’s. I also want to make homemade yogurt but not till he is 6 months old can he eat that. It has only taken me a couple mins to make his food each day and I need to buy ice cube trays badly! Well, I am off to watch the video! Hope to talk to you soon!

Yeah, I even procrastinated buying the book! So Monday I just decided to go back to Barnes and Noble to buy it. He is eating bananas this week and who knows what next week?!! Maybe we can get together for some baby/pool time next week? Can’t wait to see how much Connor has grown!!
